What to Do When Your Company Elects a Shocking Boss

What to Do When Your Company Elects a Shocking Boss Many of us have had to deal with a shocking boss at some stage in our careers. They appear first as wolves in sheeps clothing, seeming lovely enough from the outset, not unlike most other  professionals you shake hands with. Their manipulative, patronising, harsh and cutting attributes tend to creep up slowly, catching us  by surprise. Theres research to  suggest 1 in 5 CEOs possess psychopathic tendencies, and this  DailyMail article paints a sombre picture of the  prevalence and ripple effects of these cunning individuals.  What can  you do when your company appoints an absolute shocker of a boss? Theres no one-size-fits-all answer and the answer might not  be to get straight outta there. Here are some  of our pointers on how you can handle the situation. (And remember if you ever feel threatened or  unsure,  seek out some bespoke, professional advice.) Check yourself As a first port of call, take a step back from the situation and critically analyse them and the situation.  Are they definitely in the wrong Are they definitely being unreasonable? Consider all external factors and your own performance, and make sure you are confident  in your diagnosis of them as a terrible boss. Document things If you are getting spiteful emails sent, given unrealistic expectations or being treated harshly, try to document the occurrences as closely as you can. Keep emailand dated records of different incidents, in case you need to reference them and prove your claims down the track. Try to understand them Their job  on paper might be to manage you, but actually it might be you who has to do a lot of that management. Put yourself in their shoes and try to see things from their perspective. Even if they are completely outlandish or inapproriate, understanding the why behind their behaviours can help you deal with them in a calmer manner. Minimise  ammunition Try to work out what irks them and do as much as you can to minimise triggers of their annoyance or anger. While no one likes to tip toe aorund on eggshells, you can attempt to take control of the situation by understanding the part you plan in the relationship and being the bigger person. Try to not  take it personally Where possible, try removing your emotions from the situation. Realise that, if they are a psychopathic boss, the issue lies with them, not you; youre just one of the people who has to try deal with them. Stand up for yourself, respectfully Dont stand for bullying or inappropriate treatment. Speak up and look after yourself, and be sure to do so in a respectful, polite way. Be assertive if you need, but dont let them siphon the confidence out of you. Resist temptations to undermine them Play clean. Trying to undermine them or make them look bad could seriously backfire on you. Dont stoop to their level; instead, take professional steps to address your concerns. Learn from them If theres one good thing that can come out of a situation where you have a horrible boss, its what you can learn from them. They can teach you to be more resilient, stand up for yourself, become more assertive the list goes on. You might even be able to learn from their work ethic or drive to succeed. Research and respond Dont be reactive when you find yourself faced with a shocking boss. Take calm, calculated steps at reducing the effect on yourself. If you decide that its best for you to move on,  be sure to educate yourself as much as possible about the move you want to make, and avoid  a complicated, messy breakup with your current company. Finally, remember to put yourself first and remain in control. Good luck! Related: How to Manage a Bad Manager. Making Your Store More Attractive

Making Your Store More Attractive For many women, organizing and decorating is something that brings more fulfillment than frustration. But for those who would much rather be spending their time working on their business rather than making their store look enticing, it can be a challenge to find the desire to design a great looking retail store as well as find the know-how to use effective tactics. When you find yourself in this situation, use these three tips to help make your retail store more attractive to your customers by employing the most recent trends and design principles.   Working With Windows Before people even make it into your store, they’re going to have their first impression made by looking through the front windows. Whether you have traditional window display space or not doesn’t really matterâ€"it’s all about getting passersby to come in, regardless of how you do it. According to Roy Rochberg, a contributor to Smart-Retailer.com, it’s best to use your window displays as a way to create interest in your store and entice impulse buyers to venture in. So if you can set up your window displays or showcase certain products easily through your windows, you’re well on your way to attracting more customers to your establishment. Hiring the Right Help Having a good looking store isn’t the only thing that’s going to inspire people to shop with you. According to Bob Phibbs of RetailDoc.com, hiring the right employees can make or break the experience customers have with your store. When your employees are happy and well trained on how to interact with customers and answer questions regarding products and services, it makes your customers more likely to reenter your store in the future. The experience for customers will always be better in stores where they feel knowledge and positivity can be shared between themselves and those who are the face of your business. Creating An Unforgettable Atmosphere While setting up your store in a logical and intuitive way will be a major benefit to shoppers, people come into retail stores because they want to experience the atmosphere you’re able to create there. Almost anything can be bought online now, so it’s vital that you give your customers something extra if you plan to have a success brick and mortar store. Store Design Importance According to Paul Nugent, a contributor to ShopKeep.com, a store can create an unforgettable atmosphere by keeping their space clean of clutter, having clearly defined zones within the store, installing bright lighting, and using statement pieces like flooring and point of purchase displays to give your establishment individuality. By doing these things and more to improve the atmosphere of your store, you will find that your customers go to you for more than just your products or services, creating an even more loyal customer base. Without an attractive and enticing retail store, many store owners may find themselves as part of the statistic of business owners who go under in the first year. Use the tips mentioned above to give your retail store a facelift and beat the odds once and for all. Images: Store Window: Elvert Barnes  Storefront JJ

Do Your Posts Fit the Channel - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Do Your Posts Fit the Channel - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Engaging your audience isn’t always as simple as creating a basic post that can be used in any situation. Because there are numerous social mediums available, we must always consider that there are several different audience desires that coincide with them. Basically, social networks and audience channels have different formats and different audience bases, all of which require a unique delivery of content. This means you’ll have to consider all the qualities of each audience. What interests them? How do they interact? Is there only occasional sharing of certain information? Do they prefer visuals? What about the content’s subject material? Etiquette matters Never neglect the importance of social etiquette. The last thing your personal branding strategy needs is to drive the audience away from your content by annoying, upsetting, or even confusing them. So always be sure that you know exactly what is expected of your interactions through any marketing channel.   After all, you don’t want to find yourself guilty of “spamming” your networks and driving them away. Introductions first One of the many things to consider is: Do you need to introduce your post? Yes, in a sense. Most social networks require a proper introduction through which it functions as an enticing device for the audience. It could be a topic, a question you plan to answer, or a general summary. The principle is to use your introduction to develop interest. Visual boost Then there is the culmination of so many different techniques and strategies, as we often notice in Facebook sharing. All forms of content can be shared, but not all forms are appreciated by every audience. Even here, there are certain strategies that take precedence over others. Primarily, Facebook users prefer pictures and memes, which simplify a message, but that doesn’t guarantee interaction. There is still the need to experiment with your content to see what works with your audience. Visuals matter a lot to social. How can you improve your link’s visibility?  [tweet this] Methods would include using tools such as Post Rocket which can turn a regular link into a visual incentive by adding pictures from the site to your link. Space is limited Then there’s the need to deliver a fast and simple message that gains the most visibility. For example, Twitter formats require that you deliver your message quick and short, so there isn’t really much time or space to carry on a lengthy conversation. This means you’ll need to be compelling within the first few words. Additionally, incorporating influential techniques, such as hashtags, allow you to connect with other users of common interest. Google+ and Twitter both take advantage of this, just be sure it isn’t the bulk of your shared content. Link to influence This brings up the aspect of links. When and where should you link within your post? Using the right content at the right time, such as video or hyperlinks to your blog, will affect how your post appears to the reader. Do they see the link and have to read further to decide what it means to them? Is it merged into the content effectively? Is it hard for them to find? Remember, context is even more important than content.  [tweet this] Reaching through video is extremely popular on various channels, but only when done properly. Be sure that you make your content as shareable, across all platforms, as possible. Are you using a transcript to clarify your message? Can the content of your video be shared effectively? Is it mobile friendly? There are several qualities needed to help channel the best in your brand. Not all social networks or media tools will work for you or personally represent your brand in the best light. What networks are off limits for you or do you deem not ones that you would spend your time on? For instance, if you're able to read your six resume writing services client, you will notice that they have written on multiple occasions that you have a degree. It's possible for you to tell that they wrote this information without actually having a degree from a school. Some business owners may even believe that they can write a resume for someone that has never been to college, but this is the worst mistake a person can make when starting a resume writing service. After all, a student is going to need to have his or her educational history before being hired as a worker, regardless of whether the student has a college degree or not. This is important for two reasons. First, when a prospective client reads your resume, they will want to know more about your experiences and what you can bring to the table.Second, your resume will stand out when the employer or hiring manager looks at your work history and skills. Those skills will stand out more than your past businesses. This will give you an advantage over other candidates. Since business owners are already looking for someone that they feel could grow their business or who has their experience, giving them a glimpse of your personal success is a great way to show how successful you can be.In addition to using your personal achievements to build your resume, you should also think about using them when you're starting a resume writing service. By doing so, you will be able to show clients that you've had experience in that particular field and that you can bring something different to the table. Making the necessary changes to your resume will help to make it more presentable to potential clients and to show them that you can meet their needs. If you're a beginner to creating a resume, you will quickly become aware of smal l mistakes that you make. When you're looking for ways to avoid these types of mistakes, it's important to understand the importance of a resume. You have an 8% chance of living, now what, How do you want to be remembered, relationship building and connections are how I want to be remembered

You have an 8% chance of living, now what, How do you want to be remembered, relationship building and connections are how I want to be remembered 1 Flares 1 Flares A buddy of mine recently returned to the great state of Pennsylvania after a two year adventure in Los  Angeles.  He moved out to Hollywood land to chase his music and acting dreams, but Dave came back to PA to save up some money and decide if/when hell go back.  Dave is the exact definition of freedom.  Since Ive known him hes always done the shit that he loves to do.  There have been times hes admitted to maybe being envious of his friends that have set careers and maybe more of their shit in order, but I cant see Dave ever wanting to change places.  My friends and I have enjoyed Dave being home, and last night he stopped over and we checked out Judd Apatows newest film, Funny People.  Dont get me wrong, the movie was full of giggles, but in the end it turned out to be a dark life lesson movie, similar to the feelings I had after watching Garden State.  Through the movie I couldnt help but think about how the lessons in it could be related to my career philosophy that Ive sh ared a few times on Corn On The Job.  Here goes nothing You have an 8% chance of living, what does that mean to you? Before presenting my quick review of the movie Ill mention that nothing I say will spoil the ending or give too much away.  In the movie, Adam Sandler plays a successful older comedian that finds out he has an 8% chance of living after being diagnosed with a rare disease.  Maybe a bit cliche, but when his life flashes over and over he starts realizing all that hes missed in life.  While he can say he owns an entire garage full of exotic cars, he cant say that he has one meaningful friendship or relationship established with another person.  Let the dark humor begin Adam Sandlers character, George Simmons, goes back to his roots in stand up and performs an incredibly depressing routine where he meets Ira Wright, a young, struggling comedian (Seth Rogan).  Their encounter leads to a friendship between them when Ira takes on a position as Georges assistant.  Ira travels with George becoming his opening act, his only friend, and the one person that knows about his illness.  Like most movies, this one eventually becomes about a girl, and in this movie its about the one that got away.  Georges career success, fame, and money blurred his priorities when he was younger and now its all crashing down on him.  When George finds out from his doctors that the alternative medicine has miraculously made him better, he finds out it may have been too late in his life to build what really matters in life.  Relationships. How I want to be remembered My favorite scene in the movie is one that takes place after Sandler finds out hes going to make it.  Hes sitting outside of his ridiculous house facing the water and he says  out loud  to himself Ive played it all wrong.  My whole life Ive been taught that hard work pays off, and there is no denying that.  What I wont allow is hard work to ruin my life.  Maybe Ill have a wife someday, maybe a family, or maybe Ill just always have great friends.  Whatever happens, I always want to be remembered for the people Ive kept close around me.  Sure, maybe Ill invent something ridiculous, or maybe more and more Corn Heads will join me here on COTJ and I can grow us into a career blog mecca and be remembered for that, but the people around me will always be most important.  A career is just a job and money.  Isnt that what it comes down to?  When you are told life isnt going to last much longer, your job and your money wont replace the comfort good people can give you. But what is surely different from what you want, and probably different from what my friend Dave wants in life.  To break into music or acting would be everything to him.  While Im sure hed keep his relationships, I could assume hed be willing to sacrifice them for a while in order to carry out his dreams.  We are all different, and we all have different paths to happiness. How do you want to be remembered? We all have our  prerogative.  Whats important to you?  I know us Generation Y workers must continually prove our worth to the older generations in the work place.  Should our long term happiness be sacrificed for that?  If you were put on the 8% list, what would you do, how would you be remembered?

5 Steps to Building Your Personal Brand

5 Steps to Building Your Personal Brand Darn, theres that phrase again!   Personal Branding!   Whats the big deal anyway.   Well, the big deal is that more and more employers are choosing known candidates (referrals) over unknown candidates.   Actually, this isnt all that new, but as job seekers, we have a heightened sense of awareness about how important this is. Your personal reputation speaks volumes.   Think about what your past co-workers think about you.   Were you easy to get along with?   Were you innovative, were you a task master, were you strong in your resolve to get things done?   There are qualities and skills you are known for in the workplace and outside of the workplace as well.   You are unique in your combination of these qualities and skills.   And you can influence what you are known for.   You have to determine that message. STEP 1:   What is your perceived personal brand? Ask co-workers, friends, and trusted advisors what they think of when they think of you.   What characteristics, skills, talents, abilities do they associate with you. STEP 2: What do you want to be known for? This depends on the assessment of your values and your goals and where they overlap.   What is it that you want to be doing next?   Develop the wording or phrasing of what you want to be known for.   Career Distinction is a fabulous book by William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson.   Here is the website with a downloadable workbook to help get you started. STEP 3:   Begin spreading the good word Make sure this wording appears on key marketing pieces.   Your business card, your resume, your email signature line, your LinkedIn profile, your Google profile, your Twitter account, everywhere you have your name online and offline. STEP 4:   Live your brand You want your brand to be real, not just words on paper.   You want people to believe what you are saying.   You want to develop trust.   Therefore, you will want to really live your brand. Make sure you use as many of these as possible to help live your brand: Volunteer activities Professional associations Comment on Blogs Start a blog Enrich your VisualCV with presentations and visual representation of your work Add Slideshare, Boxnet and other applications to your LinkedIn profile Contribute to groups (LinkedIn or others) STEP 5:   Monitor Your Brand Check in with your friends, co-w0rkers and trusted advisors to make sure they are hearing the right message and that it makes sense.   Is your online presence working?   Where does your name fall when you Google yourself?   Top of page one is your goal.   How many times does your LinkedIn profile appear in search results?   Is that more or less than before?   If you want to see where else your work is being mentioned, you can create a no cost search using Social Mention AND Google alerts.
